How to check your IELTS writing
Three steps, start to finish — from a blank page to knowing exactly what to fix.
Choose your task
Pick Academic Task 1, a General Training Task 1 letter, or a Task 2 essay. The feedback adapts to each.
Write or paste
Type under the exam timer to practise test conditions, or paste an answer you have already written.
Read your feedback
See an indicative band on each criterion, every issue flagged, and the simple rule that fixes it.
The four criteria every IELTS examiner uses
IELTS Writing is marked on four equally weighted criteria. Bandword colours your feedback by each one so you learn to read your writing the way a marker does.
Task response
Whether you fully answer the question — a clear position in Task 2, or a required overview in Task 1.
Coherence & cohesion
Clear paragraphs and natural linking words, without mechanical "firstly, secondly" templating.
Lexical resource
A precise, varied vocabulary — not vague or repeated words like "very", "good" or "thing".
Grammatical range
A mix of simple, compound and complex sentences, controlled accurately without run-ons.
Simple IELTS writing rules that raise your band
The fixes that move students from Band 6 to Band 7, written so plainly anyone can apply them.
Always write an overview in Task 1
One sentence summarising the main trend can add up to half a band. Start it with "Overall, …".
State your position in the introduction of Task 2
Make your opinion clear in the first paragraph and hold it to the end. Examiners reward a clear, consistent stance.
Replace vague words with precise ones
Swap "very good thing" for "a significant advantage" and "big" for "substantial". Precise vocabulary lifts Lexical Resource.
Vary your linking words
"Firstly, Secondly, Finally" reads as a template and can cap Coherence at Band 6. Mix in "In addition", "However", "As a result".
Mix your sentence types
Combine short and long sentences, and use "which", "although" and "because" to build complex ones. Band 7+ needs a range of structures.
Hit the word count, but do not pad
Write at least 150 words for Task 1 and 250 for Task 2. Under-length answers are penalised on Task Achievement.

How is Bandword different from other IELTS writing checkers?
Most tools just grade a finished essay. Bandword's AI tutor writes the essay with you, one sentence at a time — fixing grammar in colour, teaching structure, and catching contradictions as you go. It was built by a working IELTS writing coach.
Built by an IELTS writing coach
Bandword comes from years of marking real IELTS essays and watching students get stuck at the same Band 6 problems. It turns that marking experience into instant, plain-English feedback you can act on before test day.
